On Translating Euphemism between Chinese and English

Abstract

Euphemism is a very common language strategy in communication. Almost everyone uses euphemisms either consciously or sub-consciously every day. People use them with various intentions and for various purposes. As a common language phenomenon, euphemism has aroused peoples interest. However, the study of euphemism has been limited on the lexical level. This thesis examines the brief history of English and Chinese euphemism, and attempts to identify the existing problems of euphemism translation by analyzing examples of translated texts in both Chinese and English. And a detailed explanation of translation principles is offered and feasible strategies for euphemism translation are proposed.

摘  要

委婉語(yǔ)在交談中是1種常見(jiàn)的語(yǔ)言策略。幾乎所有人每天都在有意識(shí)或無(wú)意識(shí)地使用委婉語(yǔ)。作為1種常見(jiàn)的語(yǔ)言現(xiàn)象,委婉語(yǔ)很早就引起人們的重視和關(guān)注,但人們對(duì)委婉語(yǔ)的研究?jī)H局限于詞匯層次上。本文分析了英語(yǔ)和漢語(yǔ)委婉語(yǔ)的歷史,并闡述了造成委婉語(yǔ)誤譯的兩個(gè)因素。更重要的1點(diǎn)是，文章討論了如何運(yùn)用翻譯的3大原則進(jìn)行委婉語(yǔ)英漢互譯。
